Mary Oliver & Rozemarie Heggen

mary_200
Oliver & Heggen is violinist/violist Mary Oliver and contrabassist Rozemarie Heggen. These two musicians specialize in performances of composed and improvised contemporary music. Both classically trained, they’ve worked across musical boundaries with pioneering colleagues such as The Ex, Magpie Music Dance Company, the Instant Composers Pool Orkest and Nieuw Ensemble.

Now they’ve joined forces in a unique project designed to explore the interaction between interpretation and improvisation. Mary: “Between us we have a big reservoir of experience in interpreting written material and in improvisation. We want to concentrate on this in a format that is both strong and flexible. Not only do we want to encourage composers to write for and work with us, we want to share our knowledge with students, in workshops and in hand-crafted programs with academic collegues.”

Oliver & Heggen is committed to developing a genre of composition that moves freely between written and improvised material. For the first project in 2007, seven distinctly different composers were asked to write works for the duo;
Richard Carrick (USA), Cor Fuhler (NL), Hilary Jeffery (UK), Yannis Kyriakides (CYPRUS/NL), Michael Moore (USA/NL), Travis Weller (USA) and Christopher Williams (USA/SPAIN).
All have earned their reputations in the arenas of either experimental, contemporary classical or jazz composition. These composers were selected for their unique styles, and the fact that they have all performed as improvisers. A year in the making, this collaboration between composers and interpreters produced compositions that reflect the goal of Oliver & Heggen (please go to listen).

The duo moves around easily. Concerts throughout the year can be given with varying programs depending on the taste of a specific festival or venue. In addition, with this repertoire, jazz podiums, galleries, alternative spaces, and large-and small concert halls can be programmed.

Rozemarie: “We want to be a magnetic force between interpretation and improvisation, attracting creative collaborators and creative listeners. That’s our territory, and we want to share it.”
